Programs
No prior experience is required. However, students interested in competition programs must meet basic physical fitness standards and show an ability to follow instructions to qualify for enrollment.
Our judo programs cater to juniors and teens (ages 7-19), as well as adults (20+). Students will be expected to adopt judo’s moral principles, with an emphasis on respect, self-control, modesty, and friendship.
Students will be expected to practice regularly and will be encouraged to visit other judo dojos for joint practices. Our focus is on each student’s growth and success.
Students will learn:
- Safe falling techniques, known as ukemi.
- To build and maintain essential athletic skills, including strength, speed, and flexibility.
- Master foundational judo skills like footwork, gripping, and off-balancing, forming a base for advanced takedown techniques.
- Develop proficiency in executing standard judo takedowns, with competition-focused variations as students advance.
- Progress toward the next belt promotion, reflecting growth and dedication as a judo athlete.
Competitive Judo
We offer judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as distinct programs, while maintaining close collaboration among our instructors to ensure a cohesive progression from standing techniques to ground control.
Students training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu develop strong foundational ground skills, including positional control, joint locks, pins, and chokes, along with practical defensive strategies. The judo program emphasizes balance, footwork, and throwing techniques, with deliberate integration into effective ground transitions.
Students will participate in structured live training (“randori”), reinforcing timing, adaptability, and applied execution under realistic conditions.

Promotions
Promotions at Kogi Dojo take place every July and November. There is no additional charge for promotions below Shodan (1st-degree black belt). While Kogi Dojo instructors are responsible for recommending candidates for black belt promotions, these are overseen by the United States Judo Federation (USJF) or USA Judo, which charge fees for examinations and administrative processing.
